U -Value Calculations

Building elements are normally built up from a number of layers, U- Values must take in to account the performance of each layer and any repeating thermal bridges and boundary conditions. Expressed as the rate (in Watts) at which heat transfers through 1 sq. m of the surface of the building element when there is a temperature difference of 1 Degree Kelvin. e.g w/(m2k). It can also be referred to as an "overall heat transfer co-efficent" and measures how well parts of a building transfer heat.

How are they calculated.

A U- Value calculation is a computer based assessment that measures the total thermal resistance of a structure. The lower the result the less heat is lost. Building regulations/Standards regularly tighten the requirements with lower permitted limits provided to ensure that building elements, materials and fabrics are considered throughout the design and construction process. This means that a low U-Value usually indicates a high level of insulation. Using information provided by you fully accredited energy asset use the state of the art and approved by BRE software programme from Desk Build and JPA Designer to identify the required U-Values and add them to your assessment.

Why is it important.

All new dwellings have to pass an "At - Design" stage assessment by reaching certain U-Value targets and include, floors, walls, roofs, windows. If these are not achieved building cannot commence because it is a legal requirement. It is quite difficult to pass an assessment and should the "At - Design" stage assessment fail can offer support in identifying the way forward to pass the assessment.

Modelling.

We are able to "Model" any design you would like to research or test before committing to identify the most suitable building elements.

Why Choose Us.
